Day of the dead decoration indoor and outdoor

By SPARKLERY - June 26, 2023

Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a vibrant Mexican holiday celebrated to honor and remember deceased loved ones. Decorating both indoor and outdoor spaces can create a festive and meaningful atmosphere. Here are some ideas for Day of the Dead decorations for both settings:

                Indoor Decorations:

1. Ofrenda: Set up an ofrenda, a traditional Day of the Dead altar, in a prominent place. Include photos of loved ones, their favorite foods, drinks, candles, and marigold flowers (cempasúchil).

2. Sugar Skulls: Display sugar skulls as decorative elements. These colorful and intricately decorated skulls are an iconic symbol of the holiday. You can buy them or make your own using sugar and royal icing.

3. Papel Picado: Hang papel picado throughout your home. These colorful, delicate paper banners with cut-out designs add a festive touch. You can find pre-made papel picado or make your own using tissue paper.

4. Marigold Flowers: Decorate with marigold flowers, which are believed to attract the souls of the departed. Use fresh marigold flowers or opt for artificial ones if desired.

Outdoor Decorations:

1. Pathway of Marigolds: Create a pathway leading to your home using marigold flowers. Line the pathway with the vibrant orange and yellow flowers to guide the spirits of loved ones.

2. Skeletons and Calacas: Display skeleton figures, known as calacas, in your outdoor space. These can be in the form of papier-mâché figures, skeletal decorations, or even life-sized skeletal sculptures.

3. Skull Fence: Attach or paint skull designs on a fence surrounding your outdoor area. These can be cut-outs, stencils, or artistic paintings.

Outdoor Altar: Create an outdoor ofrenda using a table or a bench. Decorate it with photos, candles, flowers, and offerings for your departed loved ones. Protect it from the weather with a small canopy or roof if necessary.

String Lights: Hang colorful string lights in the outdoor area to add a festive and celebratory ambiance. You can choose lights in traditional colors like orange, yellow, and purple.

Remember, the key is to embrace the vibrant colors, symbolic elements, and personal significance of Day of the Dead when decorating. These ideas can be adapted to suit your space and personal style, allowing you to create a unique and meaningful celebration.
